09/12/04 - Welcome, Kiera
of Gulf Shores, Alabama, USA !

Kiera, a service dog, was kicked out of the 2004 Hollister Independence Day Biker Rally.  Kiera and her guardian traveled all the way from Gulf Shores, Alabama.  They had come to enjoy two great days of bands and great people.  They tried to explain Kiera's service dog status as a medical alert dog to the officer who had ordered them to leave but the officer would not listen. The officer should have known that the Americans with Disabilities Act III allows Service Animals to be at any public place.  Rather than cause a scene, Kiera and her guardian left Hollister and missed all the things they had traveled so far to see.

Note: and the Biker Dogs Motorcycle Club have complained about this outrageous federal violation directly to Elaine Cass, the city attorney for Hollister, as well as to the police department. Ms. Cass is a dog lover herself and is not pleased with the behavior of the officers involved. However, the Hollister Police department has refused to respond to our complaints and continues to ignore the requests of their own city attorney. We are asking people with assistance dogs to go to future Rallys and obtain badge numbers of any officers who interfere with their rights and then forward the information to us. See 2003 Howllister Protest Run for background info. Update: The city says that city personnel are now aware that service dogs should be allowed at the event, so hopefully, we won't hear of any future violations!

Liberate a Dog !

We'd like to remind people that there are a lot of wonderful dogs waiting to be adopted at your local animal shelter.
You can also offer to volunteer to walk sheltered dogs while they await adoption.
The dogs love getting to leave their cages for a walk!
Please visit our adoption page for featured "Shelter-of-the-Month" and list of places to adopt.
